Hello Room 3,

My trip to Rarotonga.
On Saturday 15Th June, 7 of us headed to Christchurch to start our Rarotonga adventure. Mum, Dad, Alex, Breanna, Nana, John (my cousin) and me!. We headed to Christchurch and went to see our friends then had tea at Sequoia 88 in Redwood. Sunday Morning was sooooo exciting!!!!! We were finally going to Rarotonga!!!!
The flight from Christchurch to Auckland was pretty uneventful; we couldn't see anything because of the cloud.  Mum and Breanna were sitting beside me. I got to sit by the window and watched the sky, waiting to see Auckland.
When we got to Auckland Airport we had to catch a bus from the domestic terminal to the international terminal.  Once our passports were checked in Customs, we looked at the duty free shops. Although there wasn't much for us kids, I bought a notebook and pens. I’m saving my money for Rarotonga shopping.

The flight over here was terrible. I sat with Nana. John and Alex were behind us, then behind them were Mum and Dad with Breanna in the middle aisle.  The flight was very bumpy and felt like the funny hill in Arthurs Pass Bush. We had to keep our seatbelt on the whole time.

Our seats were pretty cool. We had TV’s with Movies, games, music and I watched my flight navigation screen the whole way. I was counting down the minutes until we landed.

We landed in Rarotonga at 10:30pm Saturday 15th June. Rarotonga is a whole day, plus 2 hours behind New Zealand so we are having 2 Sundays. After going through customs we got in a minivan and were driven to the holiday home we are staying at in Muri Beach. It was 20 degrees and very muggy, Us kids were straight into the pool and we swum until 2.30am. And we love it very much, we go in it straight after we get up out of bed. Me and Breanna are sleeping in the same room. Alex and my cousin, John are sleeping in the same room. My Mum and Dad are in the same room to. My nana has her own room. We have 3 bathrooms, a big lounge and outside area. We have a big swimming pool.
Huge Table seats 10 people around it

Sunday was an overcast day and it only got up to 24 degrees. We started the day with another swim and went exploring around the section. There are coconut and Mango trees everywhere. Alex spent ages trying to get into a Coconut, he had to use a mini saw.
The Milk doesn’t taste very nice.

There are heaps of wild Chickens who wander around everywhere. The Roosters are our Alarm Clock.

Most shops weren’t open as the locals are all at church and having a day off. We were lucky to rent a van, get some groceries and we even found West Gold Butter made in Hokitika. On our drive around the island, I thought it had lots of Rubbish. The houses all have rusty roves and look like they are going to fall down, but the people are nice and friendly. The road is really bumpy but we have to drive slowly and don’t have to wear our seatbelt’s. The speed limit is 50kms/hr and is only 32kms right around the whole island.

We found a fish and chip shop for lunch and a souvenir shop. I bought a Flower head band. We headed back to our house for another swim and a BBQ Tea.

On Monday we went to Avarua, the main town and did some souvenir shopping, I bought a dress and yummy mint fudge. There are lots of bits and pieces to buy here. We had lunch and ice creams. It was hot in the sun today until it rained then it was really Muggy. Nana bought us some Rarotonga money to bring home. They have coins for their $5 and notes for their $3.

We haven’t been snorkelling in the lagoon yet because it’s been windy and a bit rough. But we have been swimming LOTS!

We had another BBQ for tea with some of Dads friends.
Every night the Geckos come out from hiding and hunt Moths. We even have them living in the house! Did you know a Gecko wags its tail right before it pounces on a Moth?

  3. Hi Renee - boy you have been very busy! What an exciting time you are having. I am not quite sure where you have found the time to write your fantastic recount of your journey so far! Lucky you to be swimming at the moment! There is lots of snow in many places in the South Island, but Hokitika had a nice sunny day. Keep having fun and I look forward to reading more of your adventures. Mrs Phelps
